There have been a lot of reminders in the press about Simon Hughes' huge amount of grass roots support from Lib Dems members "up and down the country".
YouGov published a poll of Lib Dem members ahead of Charles Kennedy's departure (although this was a forward looking survey).
If Mr Kennedy does stand down before the next general election, and these were the candidates to succeed him, whom would you most support?
Sir Menzies (‘Ming’) Campbell 49% Simon Hughes 21% Mark Oaten* 13% Don’t know 16%
*Oaten is perceived as right wing, his former supporters are unlikely to be natural Hughes backers
How serious a challenge do you think the election of David Cameron as Conservative leader poses to the Liberal Democrats?
A very serious challenge 19%
A fairly serious challenge 49%
Not a particularly serious challenge 26%
No challenge at all 4% Don’t know 1 %
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, - 68% of Lib Dem members in this poll believe David Cameron is a serious challenge to their popularity in the country.
We imagine that many Lib Dem members will vote with their heads vs their hearts.
Simon Hughes' backing of a 50% tax for high earners will concern Lib Dem members.
We think that although many Lib Dem members agree with Hughes' Tax policy (as an example) they will be concerned however that such a policy leaves them in the political wilderness - unable to attract needed votes from Tory voters. Sir Menzies Campbell has stated he will ditch 50p tax for top earners.
Special Bets believes that left-leaning Simon Hughes' courage and straight talking (although rare in a politician) will preclude him from winning his goal of party leader - and looks like being yet another scalp for David Cameron. View the best odds in the Lib Dem leadership election here;
This story from the Grauniad is all you need to know. Expect Oaten to announce he's no longer running later today... Oaten's price on betfair should be at least 200s in short order....
Oaten - the poor mans Clegg has only one MP supporting him now says the indie;

Who would you most like to see evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house?
Last night at around the results were.
Faria Alam 31.3% Dennis Rodman 28.9% Pete Burns 39.8%
Overnight however there has been a swing toward Faria, possibly due to Faria's apparent "insult" that the British public will never choose a black or Asian Big Brother winner. Current totals show Faria and Pete neck and neck;
Faria Alam 36.7% Dennis Rodman 26.6% Pete Burns 36.7%
Another poll we follow- The Times - has shown a similar overnight swing (having had Pete far in the lead yesterday evening). They have Dennis 23%, Faria 42%, Pete 35%
Special Bets can report that The News Of The World has not so far reported as to whether "Sneaky" Sven-Goran Eriksson was pleased at the observed swing in the polls;

Just a few days ago, it was up and running and looking like this;
Could something have happened for him to suddenly need to change the content?
http://www.nickclegg.org.uk/ has been taken down leaving http://www.nickclegg.org/ which remains open (Hat tip Guido Fawke's Blog)
UPDATE - after this story appearing on a number of Lib Dem blogs the website is now simply "unavailable" - curiouser and curiouser!
Special Bets are stroking our collective beards....
There's only small money available on Betfair currently as 26s for those who may fancy Nick Clegg as a potential runner but these bookies have 34s available;
We still fancy Menzies Campbell as the eventual winner, but are taking some of the 34s available as insurance... We think if he chose to stand, Clegg would beat Hughes and Campbell... watch this space.
What's next?
Tonight - First TV debate: Menzies Campbell, Simon Hughes, Chris Huhne and Mark Oaten were invited to take part in a TV debate on the Sky News channel, on Monday 16th January, 7:00-8:00pm . There were NO notable gaffes or mistakes.. Lib Dem leadership market stays stable....
Article here; "Special Bets do not believe this will be helpful to Barrymore in his quest to win Celebrity Big Brother"
In related news, the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem on the man found dead in Barrymore's pool has withdrawn from police work and is facing a tribunal over his handling of two murder cases. His verdict over Stuart Lubbock of accidental drowning was in conflict with 3 other pathologists who examined the body and said that marks on Mr Lubbock’s forehead suggested that he had been asphyxiated.
